Designing a Fear Reaction
Choose the reaction according to how much the character knows about the threat. A small gasp or interrupted breath works well for suspicion and sudden discovery, while trembling speech and rapid panic breathing can show that the character remains trapped in danger even before a full scream occurs.
Place the first vocal response on the exact moment the character sees, hears, or understands the threat. Breathing and shaking can continue afterward, but they should follow the physical movement and emotional escalation shown on screen. Avoid using the strongest panic reaction too early, because quieter fear gives later screams and attacks more impact.
Distance and environment affect the result. A reaction behind a door or farther down a corridor should be quieter and less bright than a close gasp. When dialogue is present, use shorter breaths and reactions around pauses. Layer footsteps, clothing, impacts, and environmental sound separately so the victim’s voice remains readable.
- Use gasps and short breaths for discovery, uncertainty, and restrained fear.
- Use trembling voices and panic breathing for pursuit, hiding, and sustained danger.
- Reserve the strongest combined reactions for attacks, captures, and major reveals.
