Building an Urban City Soundscape

Choose the ambience according to street size, time of day, and the listener’s distance from traffic and people. Night ambience can create a wide city bed, while crosswalk signals and subway station tones work best when the scene clearly shows those locations. Quiet alleys should feel more open and less crowded than main roads.

Use one broad city layer as the foundation, then add closer details only when the camera supports them. Distant traffic should remain lower and less bright than nearby vehicles or signals. A subway platform can use wider room tone beneath specific announcements, footsteps, or train-related details when those events are visible.

For dialogue-heavy videos, reduce the constant traffic bed and let short urban details rise around pauses. In games, denser ambience can identify major streets and stations, while quieter alley tones can mark side routes, residential areas, or lower-activity zones. Gradual changes in traffic and crowd density help make movement through the city feel continuous.
