Building a Simple Horror Soundscape

Choose the sound according to how far the scene has progressed from unease into immediate danger. A low drone can create pressure beneath an empty room or corridor, while a door creak, whisper, or distant moan can suggest a source beyond the frame. Sudden dark impacts should be reserved for reveals, attacks, and major visual changes.

Use distance to keep the scene readable. A whisper behind a wall should be quieter and less bright than a close voice, while a distant moan can sit under the environment without taking over the mix. Leave space between strong events so each sound has time to create tension instead of stacking every effect at full volume.

For games and trailers, begin with restrained ambience and increase intensity as the threat becomes clearer. For dialogue-heavy scenes, lower the drone and place short whispers, creaks, or impacts around pauses. Silence can be as useful as sound when the scene needs anticipation before the next event.

• Use low drones for suspense, empty spaces, investigation, and slow tension.
• Use whispers, creaks, and distant moans for unseen presence and supernatural atmosphere.
• Reserve sudden impacts for reveals, attacks, jump scares, and major scene changes.
