SFXVault has grown into a much bigger collection than it was when I first started adding packs to the site. I’m happy about that, of course—but there’s one thing that has been bothering me for a while: only a small number of the existing packs have actually been updated.
So I think it’s about time to start changing that.
New packs will continue, but older packs need attention too
I’m not stopping new releases. I still want to keep adding new sounds and music to the site. At the same time, though, I don’t want the older packs to simply sit there forever while the library keeps growing around them.
Starting this weekend, I’m going to begin working through the existing packs and updating them little by little.
This will be an ongoing process rather than one giant update all at once. There are already quite a lot of packs on SFXVault, so I’d rather go through them carefully and improve them over time instead of rushing through everything.
I also want the packs to stay easy to use
Here’s something I’ve been thinking about while looking at how the site has grown.
Are you the kind of person who finds it tiring to click around a website over and over just to find the exact track you want?
I am.
For me, it’s often much easier to download a pack, unzip it, and then search through the files on my own computer until I find the track I need. When there are several related tracks, I actually prefer having them together in one place rather than opening page after page in a browser.
That way of using sound libraries has always felt more comfortable to me, and it’s one reason I still like the idea of downloadable packs as the site grows.
Updating the library without stopping new releases
The plan from here is simple: keep publishing new material, while also giving the existing library more attention.
Some packs may only need small improvements. Others may need a more careful look. I’ll be going through them gradually, and the first round of updates will begin this weekend.
I’m looking forward to revisiting some of the older packs. When you spend most of your time making the next thing, it’s easy to leave earlier work untouched for too long. Now that the library has grown this much, I think maintaining what’s already here is just as important as continuing to add more.
So: new packs are still coming, but the older ones are finally going to start getting some attention too.
